Subsidy II (Heat Pump Water Heater scheme)

The Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs allocates once-only grants for aerothermal heat pumps to private households (No. 1 GN 527/2018). The scheme is open until 31 December 2019 (GN 1508/2018).

Eligible technologies

Only aerothermal water heaters in private households are eligible.

Aerothermal energy

Air to water heat pumps, that are specifically designed to transfer heat from the environment to water-based heating system, by means of a refrigerant cycle, are eligible (§ 1 HPWH Guidelines).

Amount

The amount of grant for aerothermal heat pumps is 50% of eligible costs and up to a maximum of € 700 (Schedule GN 527/2018).

Addressees

Entitled party. The persons entitled to subsidies for aerothermal heat pumps are those persons who are at least 18 years of age on the day of application, residents of Malta and have installed an aerothermal heat pump water heating system for domestic use (§ 1 HPWH Guidelines).

Obligated party. The obligated party is the state of Malta, which is represented by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (GN 527/2018).

Procedure

Process flow

Applicants need to apply prior to purchasing the eligible systems. The Regulator for Energy and Water Services will issue a grant offer letter confirming that the applicant and their chosen equipment are eligible for the scheme. The system has to be installed within six months of the grant offer letter. Part B of the application form together with the required documents must be sent after the installation is complete and within the six months mentioned in the grant offer letter (§ 1 HPWH Guidelines).
