Wallonia: Net-Metering (Mécanisme de compensation)

In the Walloon region, prosumers of green electricity are entitled to benefit from a compensation mechanism for the difference between the amount of electricity taken from the grid and the amount of electricity fed into the grid (net-metering).

Eligible technologies

Prosumers producing electricity through a renewable energy plant with a capacity of ≤ 10 kVA and connected to the distribution grid are eligible for net-metering, provided their installation has been certified and registered as a green electricity production plant by the CWaPE (Art. 153 § 4 Arrêté du 3 Mars 2011).

Amount

The prosumer benefits from the compensation mechanism for the period between two meter-readings (Art. 153 § 4 Arrêté du 3 Mars 2011). The compensation mechanism remains valid only during the technical life span of the installation (Art 24 bis Arrêté du 30 mars 2006).

Addressees

All natural and legal persons producing electricity mainly for their own consumption (Art. 2, no 2, Décret du 12 avril 2001).

Procedure

Process flow

The prosumer shall inform in writing his distribution system operator of his will to benefit from the compensation mechanism (net-metering) (Art 6 bis Arrêté du 30 novembre 2006).

Competent authority

The competent authority is the Distribution System Operator.

Distribution of costs

Consumers

As stated by the regulatory authority (CWaPE), in the end the consumers bear the costs via their electricity bills.
