Connection to the grid

Plant operators are contractually entitled to connection to the grid by the grid operator. The grid operator is obliged to enter into the bilateral connection agreements (sec. 16 par. 1 EA 1989 in conjunction with sec. 1.3 CUSC). 

A claim for connection arises on the date on which a given connection agreement is concluded (sec. 1.3 CUSC). 

Entitled party. The persons entitled are the plant operators. 

Obligated party. The person obligated is the grid operator in charge (sec. 16 par.1 EA 1989 in conjunction with sec. 1.3 CUSC).

A claim for connection arises on the date on which a given connection agreement is concluded (sec. 1.3 in conjunction with Schedule 2 Exhibit 1 CUSC).

Deadlines

Time limits on connection depend on the terms of a given connection and construction agreements (sec. 2.13.4 in conjunction with Schedule 2 Exhibits 1 and 3 CUSC).

Priority to renewable energy

The grid operator is obliged to connect plants to his grid according to non-discriminatory criteria. Electricity generated from renewable energy sources is not given priority.

Capacity limits (quantitative criteria)

A given plant operator must not exceed the connection entry capacity specified in the connection agreement (sec. 2.2.4 CUSC).

Connection costs are covered by Connection Charges paid by the plant operator to the grid operator. Connection Charges are calculated and applied in accordance with the Statement of the Connection Charging Methodology and as set out in the relevant bilateral connection agreement (sec. 2.14 CUSC).

Distribution mechanism

  • The grid operator sustains the connection costs
  • Connection charges are paid by each plant operator to the grid operator in order for the grid operator to recover such costs with a reasonable rate of return (sec. 14.2.1 CUSC)
