Regarding the target of 1 million electric vehicles registered in Germany until 2020, the Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy introduced an additional buyer’s premium for sales of electric, plug-in and hydrogen vehicles. It aims to support at least 300,000 vehicles during the support period. The costs of so called “Umweltbonus” (“Environmental Bonus”) is equally shared between the federal government and the automotive industry. The maximum net price of a basic model is EUR 60,000.

Eligible technologies

Vehicles without any CO2 emissions are treated as equal to electric vehicles and vehicles with CO2 emissions below 50g CO2 emissions per km are treated as equal to externally chargeable hybrid-electric vehicles (section 3.2 Directive on the Support for Electrically Driven Vehicles). To ensure the automotive company’s share of the bonus, the federal share is only paid if the purchase price is EUR 2,000 below the BAFA list price (section 4 Directive on the Support for Electrically Driven Vehicles). Additionally, the vehicle’s net price cannot exceed EUR 60,000 and a driving licence B must be sufficient for driving (section 3.1., 3.3. Directive on the Support for Electrically Driven Vehicles). The date of the sale must be the 18 May 2016 or later (section 3.3 Directive on the Support for Electrically Driven Vehicles) and the directive automatically expires on 30.06.2019 (section 7 Directive on the Support for Electrically Driven Vehicles).
